“Of course you don’t look like a mother of a 4 month old!!”
My husband is trying to be sarcastic for the 10th
time since morning which is not a good sign.. for him! He ends the line with a
delayed “You are still a kid yourself” said in the faint tone. I turn
away and concentrate on what to wear
I’m getting ready to visit my college. It’s the alumni meet
along with college fest and even though I feel pretty good about myself, this
man’s words are making me turn into someone dangerous.
After an hour of argument, comments and selfies in between,
I have reached my college and it feels great! (Sure! Who wouldn’t love a place
where you can enjoy while others are reminded of internals and exams?)
The college over the years has got a makeover! The trees are
gone and a fancy auditorium is in place. You can see bunch of “Kids” taking
selfies which you cautiously move away from, trying not to photo bomb any!
Reaching the venue, it is very unsettling to see couple of
people from the 25th alumni batch posing for pictures, trying hard
to look like nothing has changed (maybe except for the potbellies, wrinkles and
of course the baldness). I start to feel as if no one is recognizing me (changed for good?). My sister
approaches (She’s studying in the same college now) and guides me to the
place where there is action. I already feel elderly and the thoughts around
“Age graciously” seems stupid . My college crush is nowhere to be seen
(of course there wouldn't be any dialogue just like in college days.. but it would
have been a good diversion)
I am accompanied by my junior who seems to know almost the entire college! We are
approached by a group (mostly juniors) who start talking to him. They are
laughing with so many acronyms that I don’t find reference to in my regular mobile
dictionary. Thank goodness I had recently downloaded the urban dictionary too
(mostly out of curiousness). By the time I get the joke it’s too late to laugh! We take a quick selfie to feel normal
I sneak out and start walking towards my bike while
my phone lets out a screech. I can see
my sisters’ message “We need a senior to judge one of the events! Could you
wait?” and I walk towards the auditorium, silently thanking the urban dictionary
in advance
